Getting Fit for the New Year

Getting in shape is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions, but one that can be a challenge to maintain. Whether you want to lose weight, feel better, or prepare for a marathon, here are some tips to help reach your fitness goals.

Start by building a solid foundation of good habits:

  • Do just one or two things you can succeed at for a week, such as walking a short distance each day. Once you achieve that goal, add another one
  • Build activity into your day by scheduling time for it

Set a benchmark for fitness levels by checking these things:

  • Your pulse rate before and right after walking one mile
  • How long it takes to walk one mile
  • How many sit-ups or pushups you can do at one time

Design some fun into your fitness program:

  • Find a workout you love so it doesn’t feel like a chore
  • Watch your favorite show while on the treadmill or read a good book while riding a stationary bike

Get more sleep:

  • Insufficient sleep may be related to a number of chronic diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression
  • Adults who sleep less than 7 to 9 hours per night are more likely to have difficulty performing daily tasks. They may also experience more stress

Eat a healthy, well-balance diet

  • Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products
  • Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts in your diet regularly
  • Reduce salt and saturated fats
