Managing Diabetes as a Family

November 26, 2018

More than 30 million people in the United States have diabetes. It is important for a diabetic to understand this illness, because it can harm the eyes, heart or kidneys. Diabetics need to control their blood sugar levels and take any medicines their doctor prescribes. It’s also important for them to eat healthy and get lots of exercise–and the family can help!

Help the diabetic in your family by serving only healthy foods for family meals and snacks:

  • Use less salt and don’t add sugar
  • Eat whole-grain foods
  • Eat lots of different vegetables and fruits
  • Eat baked or grilled fish at least twice a week
  • Snack on a small handful of almonds or pecans

Get the whole family exercising together for 30 minutes or more for five days a week. Fun family activities include:

  • Yard work
  • Riding bikes
  • Family walks
  • Outdoor games
